The Culture of Vending Machines in Japan: Impact on Residential and Retail Zones

Not just Shinjuku, all of Japan is full of vending machines. There is also much more mixing within the zoning plan between residential and retail, so you see many small shops that belong to a home, but (relevant in this case) residents are also allowed to use a part of their sidewalk/front garden within the rules to to install a vending machine. The manufacturer is further responsible for installing and supplying.

I think that in terms of culture it is a lot more difficult in our countries. Place a vending machine in a deserted alley in Japan and it will be used properly. I’m afraid something like this will be demolished here in a short time. Just like it’s really cool here to demolish bus shelters and blow up trash cans. “Hey, something in the public space that doesn’t belong to me and that others benefit from? Then I’m going to destroy it!”
