The Burgos cathedral, with the sample titled ‘Faith and art in the time of the cathedrals (1050-1550)’, It will be one of the five venues for this special edition of The Ages of Man, which wants to unite the eighth centenary of the first Burgos temple and the Santiago’s road, with headquarters in Carrión de los Condes and Sahagún. All of them will open their doors in June.
In the case of the part of the sample that can be seen in Burgos, presented yesterday at the Chapel of the Constables of the Cathedral, it is about giving a vision of everything related to the cathedrals in their maximum period of splendor, between the years 1050 and 1550. The exhibition will be entered through a replica of the door that in its day gave access to the Cathedral of Burgos from the Episcopal palace, demolished around the year 1900. It will not be the only piece of the Burgos Cathedral that will be exhibited.
‘Lux’ It will occupy the two cloisters of the temple and the Valentín Palencia Room in the Burgos Cathedral. The general secretary of The Ages of Man, Gonzalo jimenez, insists that this edition will be the most extensive of those that has been mounted so far in this series dedicated to the sacred art of Castilla y León for 33 years.
It draws attention to the added difficulty of organizing the assembly in five three dioceses of Castilla y León -Burgos, León and Palencia- and do it in the middle of the pandemic, although he expresses his wish that ‘Lux’ be “an impulse for the return to normality.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Junta de Castilla y León, Javier Ortega, highlights the effort of the regional administration, which has contributed 2.2 million euros necessary to launch this edition of The Ages of Man, to which should be added the contributions for tourism promotion related to this event.
Remember that, in the case of Burgos Cathedral, an important investment has also been made to recover the reliefs of the trasaltar, work of Vigarny, They were badly damaged by humidity. The recovery and consolidation of this part of the temple, which began in 2018, has required just over one million euros, an amount that has been covered in equal parts by the Junta de Castilla y León and the Cabildo of the temple itself.
This is the second time that the Burgos Cathedral has hosted an exhibition of The Ages of Man, since in 1990 it was the venue for the second edition, dedicated to the documents of the Church. In the twenty-four editions of the Ages of Man that have been celebrated so far, there have been recorded 11.7 million views and they have shown 4,791 pieces, of which approximately 30% have been rehabilitated
