Gaetano Donichetti’s comic opera, “Elixir of Love”, directed by Stefanos Koronaios and musical direction by chief musician Myron Michaelidis, is presented for the first time in Crete on April 18, 19, 20 and 21, at the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklion.
It is a co-production with the Teatro Grattacielo in New York with the participation of excellent lyrical performers, the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra and the Heraklion Choir.
Donizetti in “Elixir of Love” wrote wonderful melodies, such as the famous “Una furtiva lagrima” which was uniquely interpreted by the Italian tenor, Lucio Pavarotti, creating a romantic atmosphere, dominated by pure emotions, in a work that still allows the viewer to leave the room with a smile.
The play was staged for the first time in 1832 at the Teatro Canobiana in Milan and is considered a masterpiece in the category of comic melodrama.
The composer composed the opera in two acts, based on a libretto by Felice Romani, based on Eugene Scribe’s The Filter. The original text is by the Italian Silvio Malaperta.
The case
It is the story of poor Nemorino, who is convinced by the sly doctor Dulcamara that a bottle of Bordeaux wine is the magic elixir that will give him the love of the rich and beautiful Adina. In order to be able to raise the huge amount of money he needs to buy it, he joins the army, Adina finds out about it, so she is convinced of his feelings and the happy ending comes, as she loves him too.
