DECRYPTION – The Dispel collective, which brings together five cultural associations, is threatened with expulsion. Since 1998, these associations have occupied the industrial wasteland Peldis, located in the town of Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux on the edge of Grenoble. The premises have been invested by the collective via a provision agreement signed by the City of Grenoble and validated by the Metropolis, owner of the premises. But this agreement has lapsed since 2015. After several years of procrastination, the schedule is accelerating …
“We are going to be dislodged like rats”, cowardly Étienne Caire, member of theatelier Mtk. He looks annoyed, sitting in one of the offices in the common room on the first floor. Around him, the members of the other member associations of the Dispel collective share his concerns: Cinex, Culture Elsewhere, Laps and October.
Since 1998, they have occupied the Peldis wasteland, formerly “The Good Milk” in Saint-Martin-Le-Vinoux. The land belongs to the Métropole de Grenoble who bought it in anticipation of the tunneling of the northern ring road. A project, to link La Tronche to Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux, finally abandoned. “Initially, the occupation of the building was proposed to the collective of associations that constitute Dispel to occupy this factory, while it is destroyed., says Djamila Daddi-Addoun of the Cinex association. And then, then, since it was not destroyed, we continued to carry out our activities in this wasteland. “
Dispel premises must be emptied on Sunday December 27
Little by little, the associations found their marks in the 750 m² of wasteland, which also benefits from a little outside land. Everyone can have large spaces to store equipment. On the ground floor, the Cinex studio can develop and edit its films, shot on 8-millimeter cameras. The October workshop occupies a space for screen printing posters. And, at the back of the warehouse, Laps makes mobile art installations.
