The cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants is expanding in Albania-Agro Plovdiv – 2024-05-01 11:33:00

Farmers in Albania are increasing the areas with medicinal and aromatic plantations, the export of which provides higher economic income, the Albanian news agency ATA reported.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared on social media a photo of the lavender fields in Kushovo, in the Gramsh region.

In Albania, there are over 7,000 species of plants, 32% of the entire flora of Europe, writes BTA.

In 2022, Albania exported more than 15,000 tons of medicinal and aromatic plants worth more than 50 million euros.

The most important export products are sage, oregano, thyme, lavender, etc. A small but growing flow of essential oil exports has been registered, as well as an increase in processing capacity in the country.

The production base consists mainly of wild medicinal and aromatic plants found throughout the country.

Albania’s rich biodiversity is an important potential for the development of the medicinal and aromatic plants sector.

More than 400 species of Albanian flora have been identified as medicinal and aromatic plants, and more than 200 species are collected and traded.

Medicinal and aromatic plants are important for the economy in villages. Studies have shown that in some rural areas almost all households derive a significant portion of their income from the cultivation and collection of medicinal and aromatic plants.
