The culminating wave is passing through Brzeg Dolny. Residents have raised the embankments to the level of the 1997 flood.

The peak wave is passing through Brzeg Dolny; the water has not entered the city.

The peak wave on the Odra is passing through Brzeg Dolny from the night hours from Thursday to Friday. The water level has reached 933 cm, and according to IMGW estimates it will reach 945 cm. The maximum will be lower than during the flood in 1997, when, according to the Institute, it reached 1070 cm.

The spokesman for the District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Brzeg Dolny, Senior Captain Daniel Lisiecki, told PAP on Friday morning that many residents of the town and people who came from other towns worked to strengthen the embankments on the Odra River. “It must be clearly emphasized that thanks to the enormous commitment of the residents, it was possible to strengthen and raise the embankments so quickly,” Lisiecki said. In Brzeg Dolny, in addition to the State Fire Service and Volunteer Fire Service firefighters, soldiers also worked.

According to the spokesman, the Odra embankments in Brzeg Dolny and the surrounding area were raised to the level of the 1997 flood. The reinforcements were made over a distance of three kilometers – from Brzeg Dolny to the town of Pysząca. “We prepared for the worst-case scenario,” the firefighter said.

Capt. Lisiecki reported that the embankments are monitored around the clock, and where seepage is detected, it is being sealed on an ongoing basis. “There were, and are, local seepages, the water did not penetrate the city,” the firefighter said. (PAP)
