The Cuban Abdala Vaccine: Highly Effective Against Omicron Variant and Subvariants

The Cuban Abdala vaccine against the coronavirus is effective in preventing serious complications and deaths caused by the omicron variant and its subvariants, which have been predominant since December 2021. The protection offered by this biological is almost equivalent to that it had with the strain original that arose in Wuhan, China, said Ruy López Ridaura, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion.

He reported that the majority of the 23 million doses that will be applied in the vaccination campaign that began yesterday will be of the Abdala vaccine; 4 million will be from the Russian Sputnik, which will arrive in the country in the coming weeks. Regarding this, he indicated that because it requires special storage conditions, mainly freezing, they will seek to apply it in Mexico City and the state of Mexico.

López Ridaura yesterday led his first public event as undersecretary, at the ceremony to start the vaccination strategy against the SARS-CoV-2 virus (causing Covid-19) and influenza, in which the heads of the Mexican institutes of the Social Security (IMSS) and Security and Social Services of State Workers (Issste), Zoé Robledo and Pedro Zenteno, as well as representatives of the rest of the institutions in the health sector.

Robledo highlighted that among the lessons left by the covid-19 pandemic is joint and integrated work between health agencies.

There should not be isolated institutions, but rather coordinated ones for the benefit of the people of Mexico, he said.

López Ridaura pointed out that to prevent influenza, 35 million vaccines will be applied and the figure is higher with respect to the biological ones against the coronavirus due to the more than 10 million children under five years of age, who are part of the priority groups to protect themselves against the winter flu.

In the case of covid-19, the group most at risk for developing serious complications and even losing their lives from either condition are older adults, pregnant women, and those living with chronic diseases.

Regarding Abdala, López Ridaura mentioned that the researchers have had difficulties publishing the results of their studies, but they presented them to the specialists of the Ministry of Health (Ssa) and they verified that the product is highly effective in preventing serious complications of covid -19.

He assured that the country has enough immunogens against the coronavirus, so no more acquisitions will be required, although it is possible that the Patria vaccine will be incorporated in early 2024. Today, the plant accreditation process continues.
