Jakarta –
Viral The statue of the Virgin Mary in Mexico has tears streaming down her cheeks. A scientist tries to explain this phenomenon from a scientific point of view.
The statue is called ‘Virgin of Dolores’ netizen up in arms. Some of them said this was a ‘sign from God’. Many locals believe Maria was crying over the violence plaguing Colima, whose capital was ranked the most violent city in the world in 2022.
As of October, the Colima Prosecutor’s Office recorded 702 cases of intentional homicide in the state. It is also said that the city is a hotbed of drug cartel activity, as reported by The Post, Saturday (9/12/2023).
“We can relate it to the level of violence experienced here in Colima state, and also in this community,” claimed one of the eyewitnesses, Victor Ramos.
Meanwhile, chemistry professor in Italy, Luigi Garlaschelli, feels there is scientific explanation from the incident Statue of the Virgin Mary crying. He attributed the statue’s ability to absorb moisture to its porous nature.
“You need a hollow statue made of plaster or ceramic, the outside of which must be covered with a waterproof layer,” he explained.
“By filling the statue with water through an invisible hole at the top, the porous material will absorb it, but the outer layer will prevent it from escaping,” he continued.
However, if the protective layer near Maria’s eyes is scratched, the absorbed water will leak out. This will give the illusion that the statue is crying.
This is not the first time a replica of the Virgin Mary has been seen shedding tears. In 2019, worshipers flocked to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago to view a painting of the ‘weeping’ Virgin Mary.
Meanwhile, the Catholic diocese in the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, launched an investigation into the ‘weeping’ statue. Chemical analysis of the liquid revealed that the ‘tears’ were fragrant olive oil often used for baptisms.
