Canadians are facing an increased frequency of outages of critical telecommunications networks. These outages, caused by a variety of factors, including extreme weather events, cyberattacks and accidents, disrupt the lives of Canadians by impacting access to telephone and Internet, as well as other telecommunications services. Canadians are invited to provide feedback regarding the requirements for reporting major service disruptions. As an interim measure, the CRTC is also directing all service providers to notify the CRTC within two hours of becoming aware of such an outage. They must also file a full report with the CRTC within 14 days of the outage.
