The Critique of the Austrian School System: A Call for Change

Apprentice editor Pascal Berger criticizes the Austrian school system.

STEYR LAND. SET 5!!! Some students have probably already heard this sentence.
There are countless students who have no idea about home economics, finances or professional life after graduation, but the question is, why is that? it is because our subjects are mainly designed for the Matura and the students are not prepared for life. The majority of schools do not teach how to calculate taxes or plan your finances. No, instead they know how to calculate the volume of a sphere… why do we need this knowledge.
The topic of finance should not only be treated and taught in vocational schools, but also in high schools and middle schools, because they have to
can.

Sign language instead of Latin

But what about the languages? Students have multiple languages to choose from, including Italian, French, Spanish and Latin. Latin is a dead language and is still a compulsory subject in so many schools, whereas sign language has been a recognized language in Austria since 2005 and was also enshrined in the federal constitution, and yet it is not taught. There are around 9,000 to 10,000 deaf people living in Austria whose mother tongue or preferred language is the ÖGS. In addition, there are around 500,000 people who are hard of hearing or late deafened and we can hardly talk to these people because we don’t learn. Sign language should at least be introduced as an elective subject.
Students in vocational schools have a big advantage over students in other high schools because they only have the opportunity to study after they have graduated, but if they want to immerse themselves in the world of work, they have to do an apprenticeship. But these schools don’t prepare you for the job search. They do not teach you how to apply, where to look for jobs and what steps need to be taken before starting your apprenticeship or career.

Grading = number lottery

But the grading at Austrian schools is more like a numbers lottery than a fair assessment. The same performance can be graded between Very Good and Not Satisfactory. Whether someone is a loser or a winner in the grade lottery depends on many coincidences: the size of the town, the level of education of the parents, and gender. The report in the national education report is correspondingly damning: in some school levels there are hardly any significant connections between grades and measured performance.
I would like to summarize again: the topic of finance should not only be dealt with in vocational schools, sign language should be introduced as a subject, more emphasis should be placed on career orientation and grading should be reconsidered. That’s why I appeal to you, dear students, to stand up and let’s change this together.
