The Crisis of NRK’s Tore Strømøy and the Controversial Documentary Series ‘No One Loves Bamsegut’

NRK profile Tore Strømøy (63) has faced the storm of his life recently. Six weeks ago, the documentary series “No one loves Bamsegut” was published on NRK, and several Norwegians expressed sympathy for Jan-Egil Granfoss (61), who was stuck in the Philippines.

– This is a real crisis

A few days later it became known that Granfoss had an old morality conviction, which NRK chose not to include in the series. At the time, several million kroner had already been collected at Spleis, to help “Bamsegut”, and the reactions were not long in coming.

Now Strømøy is breaking the silence See and listenand tells what it was like to stand in the chaos surrounding “Teddy Bear”, and everything that followed in the weeks after the immorality verdict became public knowledge and the series was withdrawn. NRK has also apologized after the publication.

– It has been tough. The pressure was so intense that I feel like I have a war injury. I was afraid to read emails and answer the phone. I also became anxious about going out, but I had to. It’s like a big claw that has become stuck in the body, the 63-year-old tells Se og Hør about what he has experienced recently.

– Should be put to death

“Ingen elsker Bamsegut” and the ethical assessments surrounding the series received column space in most Norwegian newspapers. The state channel was under enormous pressure, the matter was brought up in “The Debate” and several Norwegians withdrew the money they had donated to Spleis.

– Sharpen yourselves!

Strømøy tells the magazine that one thing is the conversation around the programme, NRK and Strømøy – what was done and should not have been done. Another thing is how the storm has affected Granfoss and his family.

– It’s terrible how they bully my mate. He finished his sentence a long time ago, and the case should be dropped. He has been bullied all his life, and it continues now. Will he never find peace? It’s sad, says Strømøy to Se og Hør.

– It is important

The experienced presenter told Dagbladet ahead of the documentary series’ publication that he is keen to tell the stories of the weak.

– As a journalist, I have come across many different cases and it has occurred to me that I should use the “journalism” to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, he stated.

He told Dagbladet that was his intention with the programme.

He emphasizes this to Se og Hør in the recent interview, and is clear that he does not want the series undone.

– They didn’t want me

– I don’t regret for a second that I made the series. At least I helped a family out of their misery. And it is important to tell the stories of the weakest. I really wish that the press that threw themselves at NRK and me spent the same amount of resources on what the series was really about, but it might not sell as well, he says.
