This week, the Mayor of Grenoble Eric Piolle is communicating a lot about a legal action he is taking against the State for emergency accommodation.
A GROSS COUNTERFIRE
The operation has everything of a crude counter-fire which aims to make people forget their own turpitudes by putting all the blame on the “State”, an easy target to exonerate themselves. Eric Piolle is accustomed to this type of media stunt to create a smokescreen: we remember Nicolas Béron-Perez, the Piollist Vice-President of housing (who therefore has the keys in hand to resolve a number of situations!) camping out a few days in front of the prefecture to “warn about the housing crisis”! Everything is good for making noise while escaping one’s responsibilities.
6 CITIES… ON THE SAME SIDE
To support the media weight of the initiative and ensure national visibility, it is supported by 6 French cities. Grenoble therefore, as well as Strasbourg, Rennes, Bordeaux, Paris and Lyon. The common point between all these municipalities is that they are led by a left and/or green majority… so their respective Mayors are undoubtedly motivated by considerations similar to those of Piolle.
GRENOBLE: MORE THAN 2,900 PEOPLE WITHOUT ACCOMMODATION
On this date, there were 2,900 people without accommodation in Grenoble, including 240 children. That’s to say “living with a third party, in a squat, in a shanty town, on the street or in a makeshift shelter” explains the city. And this is only a census of people who have declared their residence to the CCAS: we do not count all those who do not take this step. The figure may be very high, but it is not surprising and could be expected given the numerous camps and squats found throughout the city.
Rue Général Mangin, Chavant… THE CLOS D’OR CAMP FINALLY DISMANTLED…
Latest example: that of Clos d’Or, where tents have multiplied in the parking lot to the great dismay of local residents. Yesterday, the evacuation of the camp finally took place. In a press release, the city explains that Eric Piolle signed an evacuation order on Monday following “findings of serious health and safety issues on the site”. It was finally time: residents have raised these problems daily since April, but the Mayor let the encampment grow until he had no choice! The confirmation that it was indeed up to the municipality to request the evacuation despite its contortions to accuse the State sounds like a big lack of respect for the local residents who have suffered all this time.
The Clos d’Or camp will remain from April to October. …BUT A NEW FAMILY AT SCHOOL MALHERBE
Meanwhile, at the Malherbe school, a new family with three children was installed by parents and groups in the school premises so that they could sleep there at night and use the kitchen. The media Place Gre’net indicates that fifteen homeless families have already been identified in the city’s schools. Grenoble is getting used to these occupations, a fairly recent phenomenon, which obviously worries many parents and which clearly shows that the situation is getting worse for accommodation.
In addition to the camps, there are migrant families who cannot be accommodated by the “humanist” city, even in municipal schools. ERIC PIOLLE AND HIS ELECTED OFFICIALS CREATE THE CALL FOR AIR…
Since 2014, Eric Piolle and the elected representatives of the municipal majority have been hammering the idea of a “unconditional welcome” in Grenoble to act united and humanist. The Mayor will go so far as to stage himself at the neck of the ladder to plead in favor of welcoming migrants, the deputy Christine Garnier goes so far as to speak of racism then state xenophobia… It’s permanent escalation. Inevitably, the communication of this false idea according to which we could afford to welcome everyone creates a call for air and many new arrivals opt for Grenoble hoping to be welcomed there as it should be.
In Montgenèvre, Piolle launched an appeal a few years ago to migrants explaining that they would find a welcome in Grenoble. Result: camps and shanty towns are multiplying. …AND THE CONDITIONS FOR THE SITUATION TO WORSE
The situation is not about to get better. The municipality has in fact set up a large-scale reception center for migrants near avenue Alsace Lorraine, where associations are present to help them throughout the entire chain of their procedures, from the asylum request up to appeals for those who are rejected. A mega structure which will make unfortunate people hope for the impossible (France and Grenoble in particular are beyond their reception capacities) and will constitute a new attraction factor for our city for illegal immigration, after the offices of the OFII (French Office of Immigration and Integration) rue des Alliés.
THE CITY UNABLE TO WELCOME WITH DIGNITY
And in the end, the municipality is not able to provide decent housing conditions to these new arrivals whom it encourages to join the city. The result of these irresponsible calls is before our eyes: the multiplication of squats, camps and shanty towns which form, disappear, then reform elsewhere, sparing no neighborhood. It is totally hypocritical to do everything with one hand to maintain the arrival of migrants, and to criticize the State for not doing enough with the other hand!
The shanty town established for years in the Diderot district, which makes life hell for local residents. SMUGGLER CHANNELS AT WORK
In general, the vast majority of new arrivals are under the control of smugglers. Organized into well-established mafia networks, they extort them in exchange for their “help” and threaten the families remaining in the country of the unfortunate people who no longer want to pay. If the city is now providing 6 million euros to compensate the Richardson company ravaged by a fire in 2021, it is because a smuggler had burned down the cabin of a family who did not want to pay their “duty” to occupy the encampment on rue des Alliés! Camp located on municipal land: by letting them continue and most of the time by not filing a complaint against these networks, de facto, the municipality is endorsing this operation through its passivity.
The Richardson fire after a smuggler set fire to the cabin of a migrant family who didn’t want to pay their “rent.” REHOUSING DOES NOT SOLUTE ANYTHING
These criminal networks are not limited to the occupants of the camps, they frequently continue to extort money from families who find accommodation. The rehousing process further fuels the call for air, encouraging new migrants to begin the process of reaching Grenoble… and therefore maintaining the filthy business of smugglers. We also add poverty to poverty, crowding families into apartments in buildings which already have high rates of social housing, and cohabitation created in all neighborhoods (rue Léo Lagrange, VO, Villeneuve, etc.) multiple tensions and nuisances.
MUNICIPAL HYPOCRISY AT WORK
Bossuet’s maxim is well known: “God laughs at men who complain about the consequences while cherishing the causes.“. The Piolle municipality has probably not thought about it enough and prefers to display its tartuffery in broad daylight, accusing the State of all evils to make people forget its own inability to manage the consequences of causes for which it is responsible. Until “here, only Alain Carignon’s opposition group has taken up the subject and regularly dares to denounce the consequences of such unconsciousness. Pushing their ostrich policy to the end, the Piollist elected officials persist in closing the eyes and use the easy anathema not to respond on the merits. But the situation is not tenable and this is starting to be seen, both for these poor people deceived into thinking of finding a welcoming paradise in Grenoble, and for the people of Grenoble who continue to suffer from nuisances.
