The crisis is inevitable. Who will lead the US next year? –

/ world today news/ In the USA, the 2024 election campaign has officially begun. The current president has announced his nomination for a second term. It highlighted several systemic failures in American politics at once.

Relative successes

In a video released on April 25, Biden, after announcing that he was seeking the post of head of state again, called his administration supporters of personal freedom, democracy and pluralism, in contrast to what he called “MAGA-extremists”. MAGA is a movement in support of former President Donald Trump, short for his campaign slogan Make America Great Again.

Moira Donegan, an American journalist writing for the Guardian, believes that Biden has disappointed Americans and failed to win their sympathy, unlike Barack Obama.

At the same time, the analyst believes, the Democrats have no alternative to the current president. The left, left without a leader after the defeat of socialist Bernie Sanders in the 2020 primaries, has not formed a cohesive bloc.

But things are no better for the right. Republicans have tried to blame the administration for rising inflation and the severe effects of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the epidemiological situation has improved and inflation has stopped breaking records. Also, unlike in the Trump era, the economy is now less dependent on the president’s rhetoric. Under Biden’s predecessor, a few tweets from the head of state were enough to swing the markets.

In years of decline

One of the main claims against the American leader is age. If he wins the 2024 campaign, he will be 86 by the end of his second term. Given the president’s ongoing health problems, this is of course worrying Americans.

Trump has the same problems: He’s only four years younger than Biden.

This, of course, affects the ratings. Seven in 10 Americans, including 51% of Democrats, do not want Biden to run, according to an NBC poll. Just over a third of those polled support Trump’s re-nomination.

The special electoral system allows even those who are not supported by the majority to enter the White House. But times are not easy for the party electoral colleges either: they are accountable to the people and therefore seek to find alternatives to the elderly leaders.

Staff shortage

Democrats were counting on Kamala Harris, the vice president. The party believed that a black politician, a woman at that, would fit the current civic agenda: minority protection and gender equality. However, Harris did not live up to expectations. Her ratings are insignificant. Ultimately, she decided to go to the 2024 election with her boss, Biden.

Another favorite of the “donkeys,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who tried to speak on the 2020 campaign, failed to gain the necessary political weight. The confrontation between Biden and Trump simply pushed him off the media agenda. Yes, the major railway emergencies also affected him.

There is also Robert Kennedy Jr., nephew of the late president. A lawyer by profession, he has not yet made a name for himself by anything other than his surname. And although he is officially running, he does not have substantial support.

This is where the Democratic bench ends. “If Biden had made it clear last year that he was retiring, there would have been more time to search. But now it’s too late,” says American journalist Osita Nwanewu.

Among the “Elephants”, in addition to Trump being disliked even there, is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Young – 44 years old Radical: Criticized Biden for surrendering US interests to Russia and China. And unlike Trump, he doesn’t promise to reconcile everyone.

But he has not yet announced presidential ambitions. Unless something happens, Trump will stay. As well as the former governor of South Carolina, former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, Trump’s vice president Mike Pence. All have a lower rating than the governor of Florida.

They don’t expect change

Foreign observers believe that with the current distribution of forces, Biden’s chances for a second term are high.

According to Black Votes Matter co-founder Latosha Brown, the current president is “effective” regardless of age.

“We live in a country that is riddled with ‘isms’, including ageism. Apart from the false and fear-based narratives planted by right-wing Republicans, there is nothing in Biden’s politics that would indicate he is unfit for office,” she is convinced.

Bhaskar Sunkara, founder and editor of the American political magazine “Jacobinets”, recalls that Biden already has at least one victory behind him. So there are chances of success.

“If the goal is to find the surest way to win against Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, or any other Republican running in the 2024 primary, then the answer is clear: Joe Biden,” he argued.

The main danger for Democrats is that if the incumbent fails to improve his approval ratings in a second term, it will hit the entire party. And then in 2028 the Republicans will take over. Of course, this is only relevant to US domestic politics. On the external front, there is a solid consensus between “elephants” and “donkeys”. And no changes are expected.
