The Crew Motorfest: An Arcade Racing Game with a Forza Horizon Vibe – Gamescom 2023 Impressions

Ubisoft’s The Crew Motorfest racing game, which at first glance takes a lot of inspiration from the Forza Horizon series, takes you to sunny Oahu, Hawaii, where a car festival is taking place. As part of my visit to Gamescom 2023, I had the opportunity to try these upcoming arcade races. And it was a pleasant ride.

In July of this year, a closed beta took place, which allowed players and journalists to get behind the wheel of cars of all speeds and types for 5 hours. I didn’t have such a generous amount of time at Gamescom, but the approximately 15-minute demo showed what we can roughly expect from The Crew Motorfest.

To begin with, it would be good to mention that the playable demo at Gamescom was more of an interactive showreel. I was given the opportunity to test several cars for a few minutes. A wild Japanese ride in a tuning kart, a vintage car on a sunny road or an ultra formula on a racing circuit. It doesn’t matter if he prefers speed or style. It seems that everyone can choose at The Crew Motorfest. However, you have to take into account that this is not a realistic simulation of racing, but rather relaxing rides with the right dose of adrenaline. The driving model is of course adapted to this, and I had a similar arcade feeling as when playing the aforementioned Forza.

Graphically, the game looked very good, but you certainly can’t expect any revolutionary techniques. I found the car models to be sufficiently detailed and the racing environment felt alive. However, the question is whether it will look like this in the final game. Of course, the atmosphere was also enhanced by the well-chosen soundtrack, which (at least for me) forms a significant part of the experience in racing games. The demo at Gamescom was very quickly cut and before I could take a good look, the screen with the end of the demo was already flashing at me. I left the local Playstation with a pleasant feeling and the hope that Ubisoft could bring us a nice arcade game. It is then up to you whether it is enough for you or not.

The Crew Motorfest releases on September 14, 2023 and will look to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Players will be able to try out a five-hour demo of the game on release day, which will be open until September 17.
