The Credibility Crisis Surrounding the Release of an Israeli Prisoner: Conflicting Narratives and Doubts

The statement of the Israeli army spokesman – who said that he would not reveal any details regarding the circumstances of the soldier’s release – caused confusion about the credibility of the story of her release.

A joint statement by the army and the Shin Bet security service on Monday stated that “the soldier, Uri Majidish, was released during a ground operation,” and that “her condition is good and she has met her family.”

The Israeli newspaper “Israel Today” quoted a source it said was close to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) as saying that there was no evidence that the prisoner had been liberated during a ground operation inside the Gaza Strip, and that the aim of the announcement was to raise the morale of the Israelis.

The Akka website for Israeli affairs reported that the pages and comments of Israelis on social media platforms are demanding a statement from the military spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Ubaida, to clarify the credibility of the news of the liberation of the Israeli prisoner, and they say that they do not trust the statements of Netanyahu, the Minister of the Army, and the statements of the spokesman for the army and the Shin Bet.

Meanwhile, Palestinian activists circulated information about the female soldier whom the Israeli occupation army claimed was a prisoner of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades and that it freed, and she is called Uri Majidish. They confirmed that she was not on the official list issued by the Israeli authorities regarding prisoners held by Hamas, and that the name of the female soldier was added the day after. Announcing its release.

By accessing the list in the archives of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz of prisoners held by the Qassam Brigades, there is no name for her in the old list, and her name was added later after the announcement of her liberation.

Activists on social media also posted what they said was a picture of the female soldier’s page on the Facebook application, showing that she posted a comment on October 12, that is, 5 days after the Al-Aqsa flood battle, which shows that she was not among the prisoners of the Al-Qassam Brigades.

It is noteworthy that a member of the Hamas political bureau, Izzat al-Rishq, said in a statement that the Israeli announcement “aims to disrupt the video of the three female prisoners, which caused a great shock to Israeli society.”

Al-Rishq added, “No one believes the inconsistent Israeli narratives, and even Israeli society itself does not believe its leaders, and what the resistance will say is the final say.”

The occupation announcement came hours after the Al-Qassam Brigades published a video recording of 3 female prisoners in which they attacked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, holding him responsible for what happened in the Al-Aqsa Flood Battle, and demanding that he liberate all Israeli prisoners in exchange for the Palestinian prisoners.
