The creator of Cyberpunk 2077 explains why the NPCs in the game are “stupid” • Eurogamer.pl

  • Paweł Sasko referred to the criticism of the NPC
  • He claims that the behavior of enemies is intentional
  • The community believes that the developer does not understand the essence of the problem

During a recent stream from Cyberpunk 2077, Paweł Sasko, the game’s chief task designer, responded to community allegations that artificial intelligence in the latest CD Projekt Red production is not at a satisfactory level. According to the developer, this is a deliberate procedure.

– I know our players sometimes ask why AI [w Cyberpunk 2077 – red.] is so stupid (…). SI knows where you are. The AI could find you. The AI could do a lot of different things. The problem is that it would make the game incredibly unfair and incredibly difficult – explained Sasko during the broadcast, which also hosted Miles Tost, senior level designer.

– We are not trying to make the AI smart. We try to make AI behave like people who make mistakes and misjudge things.

To support his thesis, Paweł Sasko gives a few examples. Among other things, he points out that if a hero gets into combat while using camouflage, the NPCs will aim at the point where the shots were coming – even if the player moved to a different point.

On the other hand, if a player eliminated a lone enemy in a given place, and then went unnoticed to another location, he does not expect the AI to be wise enough to say: “He killed someone here, so he must have run in that direction.”

– It’s all intentional – Sasko assures. – AI must behave like a human, must make mistakes. Otherwise, the game would not be playable.

In Cyberpunk 2077, enemies are unlikely to resort to flanking or other advanced maneuvers

Under the material on Reddit that collects the statements cited above, players stated that Sasko apparently did not understand the core criticism of the NPC’s artificial intelligence in Cyberpunk 2077. chase after the player commits a crime.

It should be emphasized, however, that during the stream, Paweł Sasko answered a specific question asked in the chat – and it was about the behavior of the NPC during the fight. Some Internet users even claim that the developer’s statements are out of context.
