A new stage has just been taken within the framework of the A31 bis development project and in particular of its northern section, which provides for the creation of a bypass west of Thionville.
At the end of the preliminary study phase, the State had initially chosen two time zones: the F4, which includes a passage of the motorway under Florange by means of a deep tunnel, and the F10 by Illange.
But in this file where everyone is groping forward, the proposal for a third route, formulated by the town hall of Florange at the beginning of this year, added a bit of uncertainty where nothing was already very clear.
This route, the F5, was already studied in 2016-2017 by the State, but the obstacles were too numerous to lend it a future. The closure of the ArcelorMittal coking plant, which took place in the meantime, now allows it to pursue other plans.

New studies starting this spring
This proposed route provides for the creation of a deep tunnel much shorter than that envisaged by the F4 zone, with an exit at the level of the coking plant wastelands. It also preserves the listed alley of the chestnut trees of the castle of Bétange. On the other hand, it acts the deforestation of part of the Etoile wood …
On April 30, at the end of a meeting between local elected officials and state services, this third route officially made its return to the race. In order not to delay the schedule, the Prefecture indicates that new impact studies will be launched this spring 2021 for this area.
If these studies do not bode well for the final choice, the State is already warning: the creation of a tunnel will necessarily involve “land and real estate acquisitions”. Whether the tunnel is built from the surface (covered trench) or using a tunnel boring machine (deep tunnel).

Several subdivisions on the tunnel right-of-way
If the inventory of the districts or streets concerned is not specified, a provisional plan shows that the right-of-way of the tunnel would extend from the streets of Belvès and Jean-Jaurès to the area of the Aldi store and the rue de Verdun. About fifteen expropriations would be necessary to design the tunnel.
Information immediately contested by the mayor of Florange Rémy Dick, opposed to any expropriation. The latter is also preparing his counter-offensive: he will unveil in ten days the details of a study commissioned by the town hall, which would demonstrate the absence of major technical constraints for the realization of a deep tunnel. And which would eliminate, in fact, any risk of expropriation.
