The creation of a Palestinian state would be the best way to guarantee Israel’s security, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell, announced on Monday.
At an informal video meeting of EU foreign ministers, which Borel convened to discuss the situation in Israel and the Middle East region, he said he had come to a “fundamental political conclusion” after his visits to the region.
“I think Israel’s best security guarantee is the creation of a Palestinian state,” Borrell said in a written summary of the meeting.
The head of the EU’s foreign service insisted that Israel should not occupy the Gaza Strip and hand over control of the enclave to the Palestinian Authority after the end of the current war.

Borel emphasized.
“The UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian pause is a big step forward, but we must ensure its swift implementation,” he added.

“Given the increasing violence by extremists and settlers against Palestinians, there is a real risk that the situation could escalate,” Borrell said.
