Starting tomorrow, more than 5,500 elderly people who reside in 140 nursing homes and social health centers in the province of Ourense will be vaccinated with the fourth dose against covid. This booster vaccine arrives nine months after the start of the third dose campaign and its goal is to strengthen the immunity of the most vulnerable population against this virus. Across the community, more than 21,000 residents will be vaccinated in the next two weeks. The process will not be sorted by age, but by centers.
Galicia has 400,000 doses of the vaccine for this new wave of immunization, which includes two omicron variants: BA4 and BA5, health ministry sources assured yesterday.
On this occasion, the inoculation of this fourth dose will also be used to administer the flu vaccine. “This does not imply the advancement of the seasonal flu campaign, which will begin in October, but people summoned to be vaccinated against the covid will be able to receive both shots if they wish,” explained sources from Xunta de Galicia.
A new phase of administration of the covid vaccine for the general population in vaccination centers will begin in October. In this case Sergas will begin to quote in order of age and will start from the group of over eighty. Large vaccination centers will be used for both this group and people between the ages of 60 and 80. “They offer greater comfort and speed up the process, while facilitating the logistical issues of the vaccine itself,” according to Minister Julio García Comesaña.
Sergas does not plan to vaccinate children under the age of 60, with the exception of immunosuppressed patients. And the target population of the flu is 65 years old.
