COVID-19 vaccine eligibility has been expanded this week to children ages 12-15. Enrollment is now open in Indiana to anyone 12 and older.

All patients ages 12-15 will receive the Pfizer vaccine. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded the emergency use authorization of Pfizer’s vaccine for this age group. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the recommendation. Indiana opened eligibility on Thursday.

Previously, Pfizer’s vaccine was licensed for anyone over the age of 16. The other two COVID-19 vaccines licensed for emergency use in the United States, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, remain available only to people 18 and older.

What to know about COVID-19 vaccines for teens:

  • Pfizer’s vaccine is safe and effective. All three vaccines approved for adults, including Pfizer’s, were effective in helping to prevent severe cases of COVID-19. In clinical trials that Pfizer conducted for this age group, no cases of COVID-19 were recorded among the participants who received the vaccine.
  • Side effects were similar to those reported by adults. For adults, common side effects after the COVID-19 vaccine include swelling or redness at the injection site, fever, headache, tiredness, muscle pain, chills, and nausea. Some people do not experience side effects.
  • Children 12-15 years old will receive the same two-dose vaccine as adults.. You have to be available to return to the same location 19-23 days after your first appointment.
  • Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine Helps Protect You and Those Around You. COVID-19 has not been as serious for children as it has been for adults. However, children can still catch the virus and also pass it on to others. Getting vaccinated helps protect those around you, including the elderly or those with chronic illnesses, who may be more likely to get a severe case of COVID-19 if they catch it.
