The Covid-19 pandemic has caused up to 17 million deaths

According to WHO data In Latvia, in two pandemic years (2020 and 2021), the expected mortality was exceeded by 7,668 deaths.

The WHO reports that the global Covid-19 pandemic has hit men harder: 57% of deaths were in men and 43% in women.

In 2020 and 2021, Covid-19 was confirmed to be the cause of death for more than 5.4 million people worldwide. However, the number of indirect deaths caused by the pandemic was much higher, the WHO concluded.

In India, for example, there were around 480,000 Covid-19 deaths by the end of last year, but WHO estimates that the number of victims of the pandemic in India was almost 10 times higher: more than 4.7 million.

The organization says the indirect deaths from the pandemic are linked to other illnesses that people could not properly treat because health care systems have focused on fighting Covid-19.

The pandemic is a bitter lesson for all countries that they need to invest much more in strengthening their health care systems so that they are ready to provide the services they need most in times of crisis, according to the WHO.
