Request for wearable gadget soaring in 2020. Pandemic COVID-19 limiting people’s activities so that they need wearable gadgets to stay active and control their health conditions.
Due to the pandemic situation, consumers spend their income on buying electronic goods, not for recreational activities like before the pandemic hit.
According to IDC data, delivery wearable gadget globally in the fourth quarter grew 27% to 153.5 million units, while shipments for the full year increased 28% to 444.7 million units.
“The drive to stay healthy and fit during the pandemic is driving that growth. Fitness activities that can be done at home are quickly becoming an important component of what wearable gadgets offer,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC Mobile Device Trackers. Cnet, Tuesday (16/2/2021).
Apple maintained its leadership in the wearable gadget market by shipping 55.6 million units during the fourth quarter, holding the same 36.2% market share as last year. Apple shipments for the quarter were up 27% compared to the year-ago period. Apple Watch shipments are up 45%, thanks to the attractive prices the Series 6, Watch SE and Series 3 are offering.
Xiaomi is in second place, with 13.5 million shipments and a market share of nearly 9%. The line of wearable gadgets for audio is at its strongest with a growth of over 55%. Meanwhile, the Mi Band fell 18.3% due to supply disruptions.
Behind it is Samsung with 13 million shipments, a 20% increase and an 8.5% market share share for the quarter. Just like Xiaomi, the biggest growth in its wearable gadgets came from audio products which accounted for 8.8 million shipments, while smartwatch shipments fell to 2.9 million.
In the top five are Huawei, which is struggling with US-imposed sanctions, and BoAt, which only operates in India. Both of them sent 10.2 million and 5.4 million units of wearable gadgets, respectively.
Audio accessories are the largest category of devices wearable gadget shipped, with a 64.2% share, followed by watches (24.1%) and smart bracelets (11.5% – a 17.8% drop over the quarter).
