Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – The Covid-19 pandemic, which has been going on since the beginning of 2020, has made many changes in all aspects of people’s lives in Indonesia.
Unfortunately, not all individuals are ready and able to adapt to this situation. This, of course, will affect a person’s mental or mental health. For this reason, maintaining mental health is just as important as maintaining physical health during this pandemic.
Siloam Hospitals Palangkaraya Mental Health Specialist, dr Etty Christina Baboe SpKJ said, indirectly the Covid-19 pandemic also had an impact on mental health. It is characterized by psychiatric symptoms in the form of anxiety that something bad will happen, excessive worry, irritability, and difficulty relaxing.
“There are also those who feel sad to have sleep disorders, lack of confidence, easily tired, and lack of interest. Until there is a feeling of fear,” said Dr. Etty at the Health Talk Siloam Hospitals Palangkaraya, Friday (4/9/2020).
The danger, Etty continued, is that this stress effect will also affect the body. Starting from the brain and nervous system in the form of headaches and lack of energy, cardiovascular with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, gastrointestinal nausea, abdominal pain, and appetite disorders. “It could also affect the pancreas so that the risk of diabetes increases and the production organs can include menstrual cycle disorders,” he said.
Furthermore, Dr. Etty explained, maintaining mental health is no less important than physical health during this pandemic. This is done by maintaining a balanced diet, eating and drinking healthy and regularly, getting enough rest and sleep, and staying busy with hobbies and interests.
“If necessary, make a list of activities that make the mood fun and comfortable. Do me time, and do not hesitate to convey feelings to people you trust,” he explained.
Not only that, said Dr. Etty, do activities and good habits while at home. For example, do regular daily activities, light exercise and body movements such as light exercise. “You can also watch your favorite movie. Also, always connect with friends or peers online. Do not forget to worship and pray,” he explained.
This pandemic condition, said Dr. Etty, also affects the psyche of children. To do this, help children find positive ways to express feelings such as fear and sadness. Stick to the usual routine in your daily life as much as possible or create a new routine.
“Avoid separating children from their caregivers as much as possible. It can also invite children to discuss Covid-19 honestly and according to their age,” he said.
Meanwhile, for the elderly or the elderly, continued Dr. Etty, especially those who are isolated and those with cognitive decline or dementia can become more anxious, angry, stressed, restless, and withdrawn during an outbreak or while in quarantine.
“Provide practical and emotional support through information networks such as family and health professionals. Share simple facts in easy-to-understand language about what is going on and provide clear information on how to reduce the risk of infection. Help or provide access to health care centers especially for the elderly. with comorbid physical illness, “he said.
