More than half (52.3%) of Belgians report a negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic on their mental health over the past 12 months, according to a study by the statistics office Statbel published on Thursday. The proportion of people negatively affected is greater among women and young people.
According to figures from Statbel, 56.6% of women surveyed testify to a negative impact on their mental well-being due to the health crisis, compared to 47.8% of men. Members of single-parent families feel hardest hit with 61%.
Brussels hardest hit
In addition, 2.5% of respondents believe they have felt a positive impact and 45.2% feel no effect.
According to age categories, 63.1% of 16-24 year olds report a negative impact of the crisis, compared to 43% of those over 75 years old.
The negative impact of Covid-19 on mental health was also felt more strongly in the Brussels Region (62%) than in Wallonia (55%) and Flanders (49.1%).
