Meroni was reportedly appointed custodian of Lembergs’ property during the proceedings, but has received criticism from opponents that he used this status to gain influence in Ventspils transit companies.

Lembergs had repeatedly complained about Meroni’s actions with his seized assets. At least one criminal case has also been filed with the State Police in connection with Meroni’s actions.

It has already been reported that prosecutors have asked Lembergs to be sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property, as well as a fine of 150 minimum monthly salaries or 64,500 euros. Prosecutors began the debate in February last year and closed their debate in March.

Lembergs’ prosecutor’s office is accused of bribery on a particularly large scale, of money laundering and other property, of forgery of service, of participation in property transactions prohibited to him in connection with his position, as well as of abuse of office and other crimes. Lembergs’ son is also charged in the case Anrijs Lembergs and Lembergs business partner Ansis Sormulis.

The prosecutor’s office asks Anrijs Lembergs to be sentenced to five years and six months ‘imprisonment by confiscating property, and to Sormulis – to seven years’ imprisonment and confiscation of property.

All three defendants have indicated that they do not understand or acknowledge the charges against them.

The case combines two criminal proceedings in about 200 volumes, which were transferred to the court by the prosecutor’s office in the second half of 2008.

The Riga Regional Court reopened the case on 20 August 2009.

It is also reported that ASV Treasury On 9 December last year, the Office for the Control of Foreign Assets (OFAC) imposed sanctions on Lemberg and four related legal entities for corruption on the basis of the so-called Magnitsky Law.

Lembergs believes that, consequently, an objective and fair court in Latvia is “no longer possible”.
