/ world today news/ The Sofia City Court refused to register the party of Lyutvi Mestan – DOST.
The decision of the SGS can be appealed to the Supreme Court of Cassation. At the same time, DOST stated that they will appeal the decision as early as Monday.
As soon as the decision of the City Court became clear, DOST defined it as “bad news not for Democrats for Responsibility, Freedom and Tolerance (DOST), but for Bulgaria, for the democratic and Euro-Atlantic image of our country”. Lyutvi Mestan is categorical that the party was established in full compliance not only with the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria, but also with the Law on Political Parties. “We have a strong expectation that the Supreme Court will take into account this fact, which is definitely contained in the conclusion of the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office”.
During the submission of the documents to the SGS for the registration of the DOST, Lyutvi Mestan said at the end of April that “all the documents for the registration of the party are prepared in such a way that they do not give any reason to be considered incorrect”.
The creation of the new party came about after on December 24 last year, on the eve of his 55th birthday, the then leader of the DPS, Lyutvi Mestan, was removed from his post and expelled from the party. The dramas in the DPS and around Mestan polarized public opinion and that of politicians, Ahmed Dogan for some turned out to be the new Levski, and Mestan – a traitor to national interests and a Turkish traitor. Because of this scandal, Bulgaria and Turkey were forced to hand each other protest notes and diplomats were subsequently recalled.
DOST comments on the court’s reasons for not registering the party. According to Lyutvi Mestan, “the judge is biased and biased”, and the reasons are “absolutely untenable”. (On June 17, the DOST requested the recall of the judge from the SGS assigned to hear the company case for the DOST registration).
One of the reasons for the court’s refusal is – the abbreviation of the DOST party was a Turkish word. The second motive, even more untenable according to Mestan – most members of DOST were ethnic Turks and therefore the party was ethnic.
“We have strong expectations that the Supreme Court will be objective and impartial, because we continue to believe that in Bulgaria democratic rules, procedures and principles are equally applicable to everyone. We also believe that in Bulgaria – a member of NATO and the EU, it is not possible to limit the right and freedom for political activity. The constitutional right of free association of Bulgarian citizens is higher than the interests of the oligarchy, the extreme nationalistic passions and the interests of the anti-NATO and anti-European forces in Bulgarian society,” states Lyutvi Mestan. According to him, the non-registration of DOST will mean only one thing – the violation of the constitutional right to political association and the victory of the retrograde forces in Bulgaria.
