The country’s top-selling retailers

Together, the 100 largest retailers in Austria have annual sales of 38.7 billion euros, as the trade association has analyzed.

With the ranking of the “Austrian Top 100 Retailers”, the trade association lists which industry companies had the highest turnover in the respective 2018 or 2018/19 financial years. According to self-reported Rewe International (excluding Bipa), the front runner with gross sales of EUR 7.68 billion is Spar (excluding Hervis) with EUR 6.13 billion. In third and fourth place are discounters Hofer with 4.2 billion and Lidl with 1.35 billion euros. The next largest representative of the food retail trade can be found with MPreis in 9th place with just under 749 million euros in net sales. Nah & Frisch made it to 24th place with 297 million euros (gross), Unimarkt is in 30th place with 226.39 million euros net.

The big winners were once again the pure online retailers: Amazon moved up one place to 8th, sales in Austria were estimated at 763.2 million euros, an increase of more than ten percent compared to the previous year. In 22nd and thus seven places ahead than a year ago is Zalando with 341.8 million euros. So it is hardly surprising that 80 percent of the stationary retailers represented in the ranking also do business online.

Triumphant advance for e-commerce

The branches that have grown the most are food retailers (plus 7 percent), sports goods retail (plus 10 percent), generalists and suppliers of shoes and leather goods, which each grew by a third. Strong e-commerce and the market entry of new competitors such as Mediashop, TK Maxx and Action are named as growth drivers.

Together, the 100 companies on the list generated sales of 38.7 billion euros, an increase of 6 percent compared to the previous year’s ranking. These sales correspond to 57 percent of retail-relevant consumer spending. In order to be among the top 100 retailers in terms of sales, at least 38.8 million euros must be earned. “The entry into the charts of the trade is getting harder and harder”, commented trade association managing director Rainer Will on this fact. The complete ranking can be found free of charge on the trade association website
