The Costly Impact of Vandalism on Cars in Bouches-du-Rhône

What a surprise, when you wake up, to find your car with a broken window, flat tire, or scratched door. Nothing so extraordinary in the Bouches-du-Rhône, and especially in Marseille. Here, according to a study by the SRA 4.08% of claims assessed for insurance are due to vandalism, against a national average of 1.15%.

“I can’t justify this, it’s gratuitous vandalism”

Jules lives in the Vauban district, in the 6th arrondissement of Marseille. In six months, his car, parked in this quiet neighborhood, was vandalized twice. Even if he thought he saw Paris at the top of the ranking (in fact in second position), he is not very surprised by the first place in Bouches-du-Rhône. “I can’t justify it. Nobody leaves valuables in their car anymore. It’s gratuitous vandalismhe explains.

Nothing very surprising for Alain, mechanic in the 4th arrondissement of Marseille: “per week, we happen to have three or four cars to be repaired due to vandalism”. The body currently has two cars affected by this type of damage. “On this one, we have a broken window, a scratch on the right front door and traces of blood to clean inside”he says.

Expensive repairs

Repairs often cost very quickly: 1 000 euros for the car Alain is talking about. And for good reason, acts of vandalism are so numerous that insurance companies adapt their rates. According to this SRA study, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, repairs cost twice as expensive than the national average.
