The Cost of Home Loans: Fixed vs Variable Interest Rates

Business

How much does a loan for a home currently cost? The Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor has obtained offers from several banks and found that loans with fixed interest rates are currently cheaper than those with variable interest rates.

In mid-October, the Chamber of Labor in Upper Austria obtained loan conditions from a total of eight banks and four building societies – for a housing loan of 300,000 euros with a term of 30 years. While a year ago variable interest loans were available from two percent, now it is five percent at the cheapest bank and six percent at the most expensive bank.

Pay attention to the repayment plan and additional costs

While a year ago it was still possible to get this loan with a rate of, in the best case, around 1,160 euros, the repayment is now more than 1,670 per month. That’s more than 500 euros more per month. The most expensive bank currently charges just under 1,850 euros per month for the requested home loan.

The AK advises that you definitely get several offers and pay attention to the same requirements. A detailed repayment plan should be requested and additional costs should also be negotiated.
