Lean forward when sitting on the toilet with your hands resting on your thighs
Make sure your knees are bent and higher than your hips (it may help to use a stool if the toilet is high or you’re not very tall)
Make sure your feet are flat on the ground (or on a stool)
Try to fill your lungs, breathing through your mouth to prevent the pelvic floor from tensing and contracting (diaphragmatic breathing)
Relax your abdominal muscles as you inhale deeply.
Relax your anal sphincter to let the stool out
Use your deep breath to increase the pressure in your abdomen and push down toward your anus.
Try this a maximum of 3 times. If that doesn’t work, get off the toilet and walk around. A warm drink may help.
