The coronavirus pandemic already reaches the number of 10 million people infected worldwide and the global number of reported deaths is 500,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
Approximately one in four of those deaths, more than 125,000, have been reported in the United States, where the number of infected people exceeds 2.5 million. The country with the next highest number of deaths is Brazil, with more than 57,000, or approximately one in nine.
In at least 26 states in the United States there has been a record increase in daily infections and 11 entities have slowed their reopening plans, including the three most populous in the country and where a large part of the Latino population is also concentrated: Florida, Texas and California.
In this last state Governor Gavin Newsom ordered Sunday to close all bars that had reopened in seven counties and called on eight other counties to do the same, due to the rapid spread of the virus in some parts of the entity.
The counties under the order to close these recreation establishments are: Los Angeles, Fresno, San Joaquin, Kings, Kern, Imperial, and Tulare.
State authorities also asked Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Stanislaus counties to issue local health orders to close the bars.
“Californians must remain vigilant against this virus,” Newsom said in a statement. “COVID-19 is still circulating in California and in some parts of the state, getting stronger. So it is critical that we take this step to limit the spread of the virus in counties that are experiencing the greatest increases. “
On Saturday, California reported an increase in nearly 6,000 new cases of the virus in just 24 hours. Nearly 5,900 people have died from COVID-19 related complications in the state. AND it is believed that the number of infections in the country could be 10 times higherBecause many people have not been tested, and studies suggest that many can become infected without symptoms or feel sick.
Florida reached a new daily record of more than 9,500 new infections Saturday.. South Carolina, Nevada and Georgia also reported daily figures that they had not previously recorded. Meanwhile, the state of Washington halted its return to normalcy due to a growing number of cases and concerns about the coronavirus outbreak.
In Texas 6,000 new cases were reported on Saturday, an increase that comes weeks after Governor Greg Abbot authorized the reopening of certain businesses in early May. Bars and restaurants were ordered closed on Friday to mitigate the spread of the virus.
“COVID-19 has taken a very fast and dangerous turn in Texas in the past few weeks,” said Abbott.
Since the restrictions have been gradually lifted since mid-April across the country, cases have increased again. In the last 24 hours, they registered 2,456 new cases, to add 220,180, according to reports by the country’s health officials to the Reuters news agency.
