The World Health Organization said that the “Corona” pandemic and critical funding gaps have weakened mental health services in Africa, at a time of high demand for these services.
A WHO report indicated that the survey, which included 28 African countries, reported reports of 37% of the countries that participated in it, that mental health response plans are partially funded and another 37% reported no money at all.
For her part, Dr. Machidisu Mueti, Director General of the WHO Regional Office, said that isolation, loss of income and the death of loved ones in addition to the barrage of information about the risks of the Corona virus can raise stress levels and lead to mental health conditions or exacerbate current conditions.
She added that the pandemic revealed that mental health should be an essential part of health services during outbreaks and emergencies.
A report by the organization stated that recent studies on Africa and the Corona epidemic revealed that African countries occupy 15 top places out of 30 countries in the world in suicides per 100,000 people.
