The last card that the MR and the N-VA threw on the table is that there is still plenty of time to decide to extend the nuclear power plants. A new legal framework can thus be approved by parliament, and the extension would also be technically possible.
But yesterday, Engie Electrabel knocked them out of their hands: deciding to keep the two youngest reactors open takes 5 “incompressible years”, mainly due to the technical aspects of that extension. And in addition, says Engie, an Environmental Impact Report is also needed, and a survey of 16 European countries, all of which are located within a 1,000 km radius of the nuclear power plants. For Engie, the “point of no return” has long since passed.
