The convent of San Francisco de Silos, in the Burgos town of Santo Domingo de Silos, will house a School of Plastic Creators that could start operating in the spring of 2023. It is one of the projects approved at the meeting held today by the Board of Trustees of the Silos Foundation, according to what its secretary, René Jesús Payo, assured the Ical agency.
Thus, he stressed that with this new project it is intended to “turn Silos into a center where emerging young people can come”, providing them with an aid bag with accommodation and subsistence paid, as well as with different ‘masterclasses’, and that it gives rise to the creating an exhibition of these emerging artists.
The intention, explained René J. Payo, is for this School to take place for two months in spring, predictably, it advanced, “in May and June” with the aim of “creating a dynamic of new contemporary art creators”. In addition, the idea is to also support “established creators”, over 40, so that they can also show their work in Silos.
In this way, René Jesús Payo stressed that “it is linked to the tradition of Santo Domingo de Silos as a meeting point for medieval art with contemporary art, giving the magnificent results that it gave in the past with the exhibitions that were held in the Monastery” of the Benedictine monks.
After insisting that they are “very excited” with this initiative, he advanced that “this spring the proposals will be completed” and “the national call for scholarship holders and stockbrokers who attend” could already be launched. Likewise, the secretary of the Silos Foundation Board of Trustees pointed out that they will also be put in contact with the cultural managers of Burgos and Castilla y León so that “they can start with their first exhibitions and show their work.”

Other items on the agenda of the Board meeting were the summary of the activities that have been carried out in 2021, as well as the action plan and the proposed activities for the next year 2022. Among the novelties, René J. Payo highlighted the creation of a contemporary art course that could become “a benchmark” and predicted that it is expected to begin “at the end of the year.”
In addition, it was agreed to continue collaborating in the commemoration of the VIII Centenary of the death of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, patron of the province of Burgos, founder of the Order of Preachers and one of the most international Castilian and Leonese people. Within the action plan for 2022, the literary and photographic contests on monastic life will continue, as well as the rapid painting contest.
