The Controversy Surrounding the Naming of Countries on Poles in the O. Kalpak Square of Jēkabpils State Gymnasium

“Why in 2023, in the freshly built square of the renovated Jēkabpils State Gymnasium, intended for festive events, are there such poles?! In the same row as the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, also the aggressor country [Krievijas un Baltkrievijas] names!” Viola asks the show.

The Jēkabpils regional government informed that the O. Kalpak square, where there are metal poles with the names of 10 countries, has been improved within the framework of the cross-border project “Creation of the international tourist route “Strūve geodesic circle”” (Struve).

The municipality stated that on the modern geographical map, the geodesic arc of Struve crosses 10 countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, which is also reflected in this particular solution of the poles. Geodesic arc measurements are defined as one of the methods for determining the size and shape of the Earth. The surveying of the meridian arc was carried out from 1816 to 1855 under the leadership of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve.
