The Controversy Surrounding the E-KTP Corruption Case and Political Response in Jakarta

Jakarta

Chairman Golkar Party Airlangga Hartato responded to the former KPK Chairman’s story Agus Rahardjo that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had asked for the e-KTP corruption case to be stopped. Airlangga said that at that time Golkar’s position was that of a victim.

“The Golkar Party became a victim of e-KTP, so I am no comment,” said Airlangga after attending the TKN National Coordination Meeting at the Borobudur Hotel, Central Jakarta, Friday (1/12/2023).

The Indonesian Minister of Economy said that this statement had actually been denied by the Presidential Palace. He emphasized that his party was following the applicable legal provisions.

“It’s been denied, it’s been denied. If it’s from a different party, then we’ll just follow it rule of law there are,” he said.

Agus Rahardjo previously revealed the story about Jokowi asking the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to stop the e-KTP corruption case which dragged the name of former DPR Speaker Setya Novanto. Agus said that this moment was one of the driving forces for the revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law. The Palace emphasized that the revision of the Corruption Eradication Committee Law was not the government’s initiative, but rather the DPR’s initiative.

Agus’ story about the meeting with Jokowi was conveyed in an interview with the Rosi program on Kompas TV as quoted, Friday (1/12). Agus said that at that time Jokowi was summoned alone to the Palace.

“I can honestly say that during the e-KTP case I was summoned alone, by the President. The President at that time was accompanied by Mr. Pratikno. I was surprised that he usually summoned five of them, how come he was alone. And he was not summoned through the press room, but through a small mosque like that,” said Agus.

As soon as he entered, Agus said Jokowi was already angry. According to Agus, Jokowi asked the KPK to stop Setya Novanto’s e-KTP case.

“There, as soon as I entered, the President was already angry. He wanted… because just when I entered, he was already shouting ‘Stop’. I was surprised, stop it, what was it that was stopped,” said Agus.

“After I sat down, it turned out that I just found out that the person who told me to stop it was Mr. Setnov, Chairman of the DPR at that time, who had an e-KTP case so that it would not continue,” he continued.

Palace response

The Palace responded to Agus’ statement regarding Jokowi who asked for Setnov’s e-KTP case to be stopped. The Palace stated that the moment Jokowi and Agus met was not on the president’s agenda.

“After checking, the meeting being discussed was not on the President’s agenda,” said the President’s Special Staff Coordinator, Ari Dwipayana, in a written statement to journalists.

“We’ll see what actually happens. In reality, the legal process against Setya Novanto continues in 2017 and there has been a legal decision which has permanent legal force,” he continued.

Ari then reiterated Jokowi’s stance regarding the Setnov case. Jokowi respects the applicable legal process.

“The President in his official statement on November 17 2017 firmly requested that Setya Novanto follow the legal process at the Corruption Eradication Commission which has named him a suspect in the electronic ID card corruption case. The President is also confident that the legal process will continue to run well,” added Ari.

Apart from that, Ari emphasized that the revision of the KPK Law was not an initiative of the government, but rather from the DPR. The revision of the Corruption Eradication Committee Law was also said to have been carried out two years after Setnov was a suspect.

“It needs to be clarified that the 2019 revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law was an initiative of the DPR, not an initiative of the Government, and occurred two years after the determination of the suspect Setya Novanto,” stressed Ari.
