The Controversy Surrounding Injury Time Rules in Manchester

Manchester

The application of the rules for adding injury time has drawn criticism. Gary Neville believes the rules will be changed again in the future.

As of this season, the Premier League will take more into account the time of the match. Injury time, aka additional time, will be longer to make up for lost time for goal celebrations, substitutions, injuries and red cards.

This can be seen at the 2022 World Cup late last year and also at the Women’s World Cup which is currently running. Meanwhile in the Community Shield between Arsenal vs Manchester City last weekend, this rule has also been applied with the match running for a total of 103 minutes.

This also sparked a reaction from the Man City Manager Pep Guardiola. Guardiola muttered that the match could go on until the next morning if all the time lost was counted, while in a more serious vein this rule weighed on the players.

But considering Guardiola’s criticism expressed after his team’s defeat, there are fears his views are becoming less neutral. But then defender Manchester United Raphael Varane also stated the same thing, emphasizing that the players were already very burdened with a busy schedule.

“I think Raphael Varane’s tweet was quite harsh. It was a calm, calculated and measured analysis of the situation,” former MU captain Gary Neville said in response to Varane’s tweet.

“There will be massive problems, Pep Guardiola has reacted after the (Community) Shield, which you would expect after the loss. But Varane’s response to implementing the rules was very calm and measured.”

“I think they will change it soon,” he added The Overlap and quoted Metro.
