The Controversy Surrounding Extra Points for Mathias Corvinus Collegium High School Program

In mid-October, Partizán learned that 15-70 out of 100 extra points can be awarded to high school students who complete the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) High School Program close to the government. From 2024, the certificate obtained in the program will be worth points at the Széchenyi István University in Győr, and later at the University of Szeged, the University of Pécs, the University of Debrecen, and the University of Miskolc. Participants in the program receive more points than those who pass a language exam (which is worth 36-50 extra points), but the advanced-level baccalaureate also means less, only 50 extra points.

Ágnes Kunhalmi, co-president of the MSZP, appealed to the Minister of the Interior on the matter. Citing press reports, the socialist politician wrote in his question requiring a written answer: “The programs and trainings organized within the framework of the MCC Secondary School Program provide education colored by public life. Historical, environmental, social or political topics are presumably presented to the participants one-sidedly, without presenting a dissenting opinion”.

According to Partizán, the online courses of the Secondary School Program typically impart general knowledge free of ideology, but at the club afternoons and “KP Saturdays” more public teaching and thinking takes place, where various public topics are presented to the participants one-sidedly and without opposition. According to the close-to-government Magyar Nemzet, the purpose of professional club lunches is not only to learn, but also to build community. According to the paper’s description, Mathias Corvinus Collegium, which is 27 years old this year and now trains 7,300 students, is “the country’s largest talent nurturing institution”, whose high school program has been in operation since 2002. More than 4,500 high school students started this school year at MCC; the number of participants has steadily increased in recent years.

In view of the above, Ágnes Kunhalmi asked Sándor Pintér the following questions:

What other similar high school programs are there in the country where you can get extra points for admission? Who can authorize this kind of influence, advertising MCC or other programs within the walls of the school? Do you think students – parents – teachers have the right to expect politically neutral school education provided by the state?
