We already know everything about the ribeye steak – famous chefs, the NRA, the Commission for Consumer Protection explained it
Minister Zaritsa Dinkova’s well-mannered position that it will be difficult for her to defend the 9 percent VAT for restaurateurs in the budget with such alarming signals to the consumer, they responded with a request for her resignation
Exactly 5 days were enough for Plamen Hristov from the commercial village of Belomortsi to become a television star on national airwaves, and then to confront the restaurant industry and the new Minister of Tourism.
On July 19, the man, who works in the Netherlands, sat down in a coastal restaurant in Varna, ordered three steaks for his family, and then the bill for them of BGN 490 literally set social networks on fire. So much so that on Facebook, a prankster put the most expensive and good meat in the world – the American Ribeye steak – on the equally scandalous pylon in Rozhen.
Whether or not Plamen Hristov understood that 100 grams of the stack costs BGN 35, a
the steak can be between 200 and 300 grams,
and, accordingly, to be 70 BGN or over 100 BGN, there are different versions.
According to the staff at the Varna pub, these “expensive details” were explained to him in advance. However, the client from Belomortsi claims the opposite in his generous media appearances. And in the clip, in which a member of his family immortalized the three steaks for future generations, Plamen, with a “diagonal” thrown through the tishira, marvels: “It says 14 times…” Which should mean that they charged him 14 times for 100 grams of ribeye steak at 35 BGN. But what befell us after that ill-fated family treat at sea?
First, the most famous Bulgarian chefs called to explain the intricacies of such meat. Who hasn’t understood what it’s like to eat a Ribeye steak,
he already reads recipes and widens his eyes when he sees this meat on a menu.
Then the NRA started an inspection, and the Commission for Consumer Protection refuted both the chefs and the restaurateurs that the price for 100 grams of steak, which can be 3 times heavier on the plate, is recorded in the menu. The Commission confirmed that there was a violation of the law, because announcing prices per gram without indicating the value of the entire portion was misleading and could be qualified as an unfair commercial practice.
The head of the directorate for market control in the commission, Ignat Arsenov, explained to “24 Chasa” that the law clearly states that such information must be presented in a clear and understandable language.
And according to the Tourism Act, restaurant menus must announce prices per portion, not per gram.
Thus came Sunday, when the golden Ribeye steak poisoned the very good tone in native tourism.
The first salvo was given on Saturday by the branch organizations. The head of the Bulgarian Association of Restaurants, Richard Alibegov
threatened to sue Flamen,
that he ruined the prestige of Bulgarian tourism with the clip about the expensive steaks. It was his fault that he didn’t see the price of BGN 35 for 100 grams.
Zaritsa Dinkova On Sunday, the Minister of Tourism, Zaritsa Dinkova, tried to calm things down, worried about the signals that the two industry organizations are sending to consumers. She recalled that the Bulgarian taxpayer
has paid out of pocket the tax relief of 9% VAT,
which was voted as a rescue measure for restaurateurs during the pandemic and is valid until the end of 2023.
“It will be very difficult for me to defend the tax benefits in the budget for next year, as I will not be able to find arguments and support for this in the Bulgarian society”, writes Dinkova in her position, calling on restaurateurs to reconsider their behavior and have a more responsible attitude towards the image of the Bulgarian tourist product.
Literally minutes later, the restaurateurs demanded Dinkova’s resignation.
And for keeping the 9% VAT rate, the restaurateurs say that “we can protect ourselves”. Recently, the industry has been calculating that the 9 percent will remain after the end of 2023.
Plamen, who released the clip with the golden steaks, was ridiculed by restaurateurs who taught him that
no one forced him to go to a restaurant
One of the heads of the Association of Restaurants in Bulgaria even called on the NRA to check the man from Belomortsi where he got the money for such luxurious meals.
Plamen Hristov himself appears on Facebook under the pseudonym “Live, Live” and demonstrates a bohemian image. In a clip on social networks, he throws money at a famous pop-folk singer on stage next to her.
