The Controversy Behind the Lack of Cross on the 1,000 Russian Ruble Note

The 1,000 Russian ruble note depicts an Orthodox church in the Kazan Kremlin, reports the British newspaper The Guardian. In reality the cross is after the revolution in 1917 taken from the church by the Bolsheviks. The building now houses a state museum.

A priest named Pavel Ostrovsky, with some 175,000 followers on Telegram, calls the lack of a cross “the stupidity of the designers” or “a conscious provocation.”

Production stopped

In response to the complaints, the central bank of Russia has decided to stop further production and circulation of the note.

The Russian Orthodox Church has responded that the bank’s decision is ‘very correct’.
