A new controversy has erupted in the marvelous little world of the internet, and this time it’s about a subject that you would never have imagined: the famous account verifications on Twitter! So I’m about to tell you a very interesting story that could well be a scenario for a future episode of “Fires de l’amour”.
It started when our dear Elon Musk – he hasn’t been talked about here for a long time -, the multi-billionaire Good Samaritan that he is, decides to generously offer free subscriptions to the paid service Twitter Blue to celebrities criticizing politics. current social network regarding its famous verification.
But there ! In response, some users launched their own anti-blue badge campaign by blocking all accounts with this status. Never mind! To calm this unexpected virtual hurricane, Elon then decided to also offer his precious little free pellets not only to trolls but also to any other user wishing to flatter his digital ego… including certain other stars!
The case quickly takes on an incredible scale: We begin to discuss the legality of this sudden offer and, implicitly, the legal obligations related to consumer protection. Can we speak here of a real violation of the rules or simply of yet another buzz orchestrated by our international Elon?
Personally, I love this kind of case because it proves once again that the biggest assholes can also create their own confusion.
Still, while we happily debate all of these more heavily legal aspects – isn’t that a desperate reflection of the real world transposed into cyberspace? -, some are asking the crucial question: What if Twitter simply returned to… the old system?
Remember! Before all this incredible and Kafkaesque story where everyone puts their grain of #SelPoivre, we could proudly (or not) wear a blue badge attached to the sweet name that then sat at the top of our profiles. From now on, however, this distinctive sign would testify above all to the fact that the user just took a few minutes to confirm his identity… Nothing to do with his intrinsically divine quality, of course!
Yet I wonder if we are not already too far into the plot: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) having already condemned several major players including Twitter for various breaches concerning in particular the sacrosanct questions confidentiality and security.
A strong return to fundamentals where the good old days of the blue badge would be at the center of a digital republican burst? Or rather a further exploration of the extended borders between virtual rights and legal realities?
