The Controversial Term ‘Blood Money’ and Its Association with Austrian Payments for Russian Natural Gas

An EU representative spoke of “blood money”. What makes this word so terrible? What brings the two substances together? And can you wash the blood from money? Plus material from Matthew to Macbeth.

What art doesn’t bring to light! It was during a discussion at the Viennacontemporary art fair that the strong word came: Martin Selmayr, representative of the EU Commission, called the money that Austria pays for Russian natural gas blood money. Such things are “sent to Russia every day with the gas bill,” which is how Austria finances the war against Ukraine. The EU Commission quickly distanced itself. But since then this word has been talked about at all sorts of tables, and many legal experts have explained what it actually is, blood money. Namely, either atonement money that a murderer pays as compensation to the victim’s family, or a reward for reporting a murderer. Neither of these applies to payments for Russian natural gas.
