The censors did not appreciate the harmless story at all.
The audience saw the cartoon “Flying Ship” in 1979. The audience was delighted with the good fairy tale, and the fans especially appreciated the songs that sound in the picture. At the same time, only years later it became known that it was because of these songs that the cartoon could be on the shelf.
The fact is that the censors were not delighted with the composition performed by Vodyanoy. The cartoon character, voiced by Anatoly Papanov, scolds his native swamp and admits that he would like to fly, not swim in the mud.
The censors considered these lines to be dissident. Discussing the film, they bombarded director Harry Bardin with questions about the beliefs of his characters and accused the composition of an anti-Soviet stance.
“One of the big bosses said: “What do you have that Waterman singing there? What is he alluding to? What does he mean by that?'”, – Bardin said in an interview.
As a result, the cartoon lay in the archives for a whole year. And only 12 months later the director was allowed to present it to the public.
