The biography that Robert Hardman has written about Charles III and his first year of reign is giving a lot of talk. The royal expert journalist has not only written about the main lines of the monarchy in this new stage, the last days of Elizabeth II or the personality of King Charles, but he has also put his finger on one of the topics that can raise most controversial, religion, speaking the royal tradition that Prince William could break when he takes the throne: being head of the Anglican church.
As stated in the Daily Mail, which has published numerous excerpts from the book, this is one of the issues that raises a rift between the heir, William, and his predecessors, Charles III and Elizabeth II. The Prince of Wales does not understand religion in the same way as his father and he does not have the firm beliefs that he always showed in public and in private to Queen Elizabeth II.
“In royal circles, it is no secret that He does not share the king’s spiritual sense, much less the late queen’s unwavering devotion. by the Anglican church,” writes Hardman. The book highlights that Prince William does not regularly go to mass, only on special occasions such as Easter or Christmas, and although he respects institutions, he does not feel comfortable in religious environments.

That would collide head-on with the role that British monarchs have had reserved since the time of Henry VIII: being the head of the Anglican church. The monarch is the supreme ruler of the Church of England, and although his role is largely symbolic, it is still a relevant title. In fact, in his first speech after the coronation, Charles III described his faith as deeply rooted. Although since his accession to the throne he has shown his reformist desires, religion was not one of the issues on the table.
But everything indicates that when Prince William takes the throne, the changes will be substantial so that the future king can be consistent with his religious beliefs.
