The Controversial Resignation of Roberto Mancini: SMS, Clause, and Compensation

There would have been no mention of collaborators and staff: but that knot in the event of non-qualification…

That the national team is a heritage of our country is well known. But it is precisely the importance that the Azzurri have from a sporting, social and cultural point of view that obliges everyone to be as clear as possible. And so far there has been little on the controversial resignation of Roberto Mancini as technical commissioner.

Wife’s SMS

The coach from Jesi gave his version of the facts, referring above all to the lack of trust on the part of the Football Federation and the president Gabriele Gravina and the en bloc change of his staff. But something doesn’t add up. Let’s start with the SMS that on 8 August, four days before the formalization of the resignation, the wife of the now ex coach Silvia Fortini, a lawyer who also takes care of her husband’s career, sent to Gravina. It is a frank message, in which it is first probed whether the president is on vacation so as not to disturb, but which then goes to the point, asking – in the name of Mancini’s serenity – to modify the contract by eliminating the termination clause in the event of non-qualification for the ‘European. The word staff does not appear (it isn’t even in the sheet that the coach wrote in his own hand on the 12th to formalize his resignation), he merely refers to the news of the last month, including the appointment of the coach sole coordinator of the U21 and 20 national teams, a choice that can hardly be seen as a lack of confidence.

The Clause

Instead, what is clearly written is the clause that provides for the termination of the coach’s contract if he does not go to Euro2024, an issue that appears to be central for the coach. Mancini himself admitted that he had asked for its cancellation with that message sent by his wife, with the aim of being able to work more peacefully.

Compensation

However, one wonders why a coach, who in this specific case also led the national team to victory in the last continental tournament, is so concerned and especially now about a failure to qualify. The fear is that at the basis of a request so important as to lead Mancini to this sudden resignation, there may also have been a desire to protect himself – especially from an economic point of view – in the event that the Azzurri’s adventure ends even before start. Of course, the World Cup failure must have done a lot of harm, but then Gravina had continued to place full trust in his coach, now he had decided – without making a secret but putting it in black and white – that if Italy failed again qualifying goal, Mancini would be replaced. Removing the clause now didn’t make sense for the president, also because the national team will soon have a clearer picture of its path. On 9 and 12 September, the Azzurri are in fact called to a decidedly important double test: the away game in Skopje against Macedonia and the match against Ukraine at the San Siro. Whoever will be on the blue bench will have to roll up their sleeves to win because the situation left by Mancio is not very comfortable and the path to Germany could be complicated a lot.

Risk of empty hands

Mancini, who with the national team (after the renewal until 2026) earned 3 million net per season, therefore seems not to have wanted to risk being left empty-handed. Because if on the one hand there was a not exactly obvious qualification that could have left him without compensation or severance pay, on the other there is Saudi Arabia with a three-year contract worth 40 million per season ready. Crazy figures with which – if the negotiation goes through – he won’t have great difficulty paying a penalty. In fact, the contract he had signed with the Federcalcio does not include any clauses or quibbles that could allow Mancini to free himself up to zero, in spite of what De Laurentiis said two days ago who in his harsh attack on Gravina claimed that the FIGC had “suffered Mancini’s resignation just a few weeks after two very important matches” because “there is a lack of legal instruments suitable for retaining them and determining compliance with contracts”. But if at first in via Allegri, also out of gratitude for the years spent together, it was decided not to proceed with legal actions against the former coach, now the hypothesis is being seriously considered. If only because, when an important heritage like our national team is involved, it is essential to clarify things.
