The Controversial Practice of Dry Fasting: Pimp Lotion’s Extreme Health Regimen

Thomas Thrap Huse (50), better known under the stage name Pimp Lotion, knows that parts of what he does are controversial.

Therefore, he makes it quite clear:

– I do not recommend anyone to do this. You have to find out for yourself. I’m just fascinated by some crazy Russian doctors who practice this, says Huse to Nettavisen.

He talks about dry fasting – neither eating nor drinking for several days.

Dry fixed for five days

Huse is extremely keen to take care of his body, is as well trained as a top athlete and is not afraid to go against Nordic dietary advice.

He talks on inhale and exhale about autophagy, melatonin, mitochondria.

– I do almost everything the opposite of what we are told, and it goes better than it did when I did what we were told. It is a paradox.

He only breathes through his nose – even when he exercises – and only eats one meal a day, so dry fasting is not something he does often, but he has tried it – for as long as five days.

Inspired by Russian doctors

On Wolfgang Wee’s podcast, he has talked about it several times, and after one P3-reportage, he received even more attention for the extreme move.

– I’m the type of person who, if I hear about phenomena that I think seems a bit extreme, I always get curious to test it out. Almost everything I do is because something has triggered my curiosity that way. You can’t just think about it here, you have to actually test it out before you can have any opinions about it, says Huse to Nettavisen.

– Why have you tested dry fasting?

– I did the dry fasting because I saw some interviews with some above average crazy people who talked about Russian doctors who practiced this. When they practice this, they have an underlying hypothesis about why this should be extra effective. There will probably not be any studies on it either, because it is not ethical.

– What should it be good for?

– The Russians have been doing it for a number of years, and I wanted to test it. The hypothesis is that it should be an extra effective fast, because it triggers a number of hormones in the body which means that you get the effect you want from fasting faster.

One of the Russian doctors he talks about is called Leonid Schennikov and, according to Huse, should have dry-fasted for as long as 21 days and finally concluded that 11 days is optimal.

– People get sick from being comfortable

The idea is that the fat we have on the body is broken down into water and that this process should be accelerated without access to liquid. Houses draw parallels to the animal world.

– That is why the camel has a huge hump on its back. It is not full of water, but full of fat. When that fat breaks down, water is formed. The same with mammals that live in the sea, such as whales. They have a lot of fat, because they can’t drink salt water. So it gets its water from the food they eat, but also from the fat that is broken down in order for it to get enough water. Or the bear that goes into the den, it doesn’t put on weight until winter just so it can use up energy during the winter

Huse repeats that he does not recommend people who have no experience with fasting to carry out a dry fast. However, he has no problem recommending waterproofing.

– Fasting is like training, taking an ice bath or sauna. It becomes an additional stress for the body, which is deliberately done for short periods in order to trigger certain effects.

– It’s uncomfortable to exercise, but that doesn’t mean you should just lie on the sofa. We are descendants of people who have survived drought disasters, famine disasters and hard times. Our bodies are designed to be exposed to discomfort. If we only make it comfortable for ourselves – then we get sick.

Professor: – I am shocked

Bjørn Steen Skålhegg is a professor at the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Oslo. He advises people to use common sense and advises against ditching water.

– I am actually shocked. You normally drink when you’re thirsty, and I think we should continue with that. How much water you need depends on how active you are and where in the world you are. If you’re in the Sahara, you have to drink a lot, and if you’re in Norway, you don’t need as much. It’s just that it’s not as hot, and you don’t sweat as much.

– There is something completely illogical about not drinking, says Skålhegg to Nettavisen.

– What do you think when you hear about Russian doctors who are supposed to have dry fasting for 21 days?

– You can certainly go without water for a day, but I don’t believe that you can do it for 21 days. I say “believe” because I have no data on that, but not drinking can be serious. Among other things, you can get kidney problems.

– When you do research, it is important to have several people doing the same thing, so that you get statistics on it. When you don’t have that, it becomes a bit like “my feeling is like that”.

– Eat when you’re hungry – drink when you’re thirsty

Skålhegg has himself skipped breakfast for the past 40 years – simply because he is not hungry in the morning. Generally speaking, he advises people to eat when they are hungry and drink when they are thirsty.

– Physiology is very easy in terms of how you feel about food. Your body tells you when you are hungry and when you are thirsty. I think everyone knows that. That’s why it’s strange that we should have such trends where people go hungry and thirsty, says Skålhegg.

He also warns against comparing people to animals.

– It is not comparable to what you are. Hedgehogs and bears hibernate, but you don’t. There are some completely different mechanisms, Sir Skålhegg.

Kolby: – I don’t see any advantages

Nutritional biologist Marit Kolby has previously stated the following about dry solids i Wolfgang Wees podkast:

– I don’t see any advantages in doing it, unless you want to see that you can do it. At the start of a fast, you don’t really have a dry fast, because then you release quite a lot of water as a result of glycogen stores breaking down and such. So you have some water stores in the body there and then the body makes some water itself also when you break down energy. So you get some access to water, but I don’t quite see the purpose of not drinking water.

– There are some who have to go to the extreme all the time and think that it has some value in itself. I’m more into staying a little more in the middle. We have lots of great health effects from fasting for a bit, but it certainly doesn’t have to be extreme. There are many good health effects of eating animal food, but you don’t have to eat only animal food and not just plant food either. It’s just as if when there are some ideas about something that is healthy, then it has to become healthier because it becomes extreme. I’m not entirely on board with that.
