The Controversial Pokémon: The Removal and Transformation of Jynx in the Anime

The controversy surrounding this Pokémon led to it being almost completely removed from the anime, with limited appearances in later episodes. Its original design sparked accusations of racism, resulting in changes to its appearance.

Like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball, Pokémon has not been spared from having controversies in its more than 26 years on the air. The pocket monsters have had too many controversies throughout their broadcast, from the banned chapter that caused chaos in the nineties, the Pokémon that was removed from the anime for sexual acts, to the theory that would prove that Misty was killed by a creature from the series. However, of all the Pokémon registered in the Pokédex, there is one that has caused the largest number of censored episodes.

This is Jynx, Pokémon number 124 in the Pokédex. Since its first appearances in the anime, this ice-type and psychic creature has enraged viewers due to its peculiar appearance. The main complaints about this humanoid Pokémon from the first generation is that it resembles a woman with long blonde hair, wearing a dress. However, this part is not exactly what has caused a large number of chapters to be removed from transmission.

Jynx’s original design gave it black skin and in combination with its exaggerated facial features, the Pokémon accidentally came to resemble racial stereotypes of African Americans from the early 20th century. The fact that Jynx, as just another anime creature, could be captured and forced to fight added even more fuel to the fire. As a result, Jynx’s design was eventually changed to give her purple-toned skin, as well as toning down her facial features a bit.

However, it wasn’t until 2005 that Jynx’s new design became standard in the anime, and as a result, all episodes featuring Jynx prior to that were banned. The first episode starring Jynx was known as “Holiday Hi-Jynx” and was initially broadcast in the United States and the rest of the world without any restrictions. However, public complaints about perceived racism forced authorities to remove the episode and it was never seen again in the country.

Jynx became so controversial that two later episodes, titled “Stage Fight!” and “The Mandarin Island Miss-Match” were banned due to minor appearances by Jynx, despite the episodes’ plot barely involving her. This continued in the next run of Pokémon in the Johto region, where the episode “The Ice Cave” was completely omitted during the English dub due to Jynx having an important role in the plot. While Jynx eventually returned to the series with purple skin in the most recent episodes of Pokémon, this character has not made a significant appearance in the anime again.
