The Controversial Congestion Charge in New York Sparks Opposition from Taxi Drivers

Establish “a congestion charge is an opportunity“Historic, rejoices John McCarthy, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the public operator of the New York subway and the trains of the greater suburbs. Nearly nine million souls populate the city of New York, to which must be added the millions of inhabitants of the suburban counties to the north and east and of New Jersey, on the other side of the Hudson River.

This congestion charge from 17 to 23 dollars per day at the entrance to 60th Street in Manhattan (knowing that there are already some on all the highways that surround the megalopolis) should come into force in the spring of 2024 but it is strongly disputed.

Some 21,000 drivers of taxis of New York (whose yellow cars have made the legend of the city) are opposed to the measure: the president of their union, Bhairavi Desai, believes that the tax will sign the death warrant of certain taxis, already hard hit by the pandemic and competition from VTCs like Uber. Like Wein Chin, 55, who came from Burma in 1987 and who, with his 300 or 400 dollars a week, says he is afraid of not “survive with a loan to pay and a family to feed“. Faced with discontent, officials have proposed adjusted rates for the lowest incomes in a city already hit by runaway inflation.
