Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho was heavily criticized for his actions in Tuesday night’s Champions League win over Copenhagen.
With the score still 1-0 in injury time at the end of the game, referee Marco Guida awarded Copenhagen a penalty after Scott McTominay lifted his foot against Mohamed Elyounoussi. During the VAR review, players surrounded the referee and protested about the foul – with the exception of Garnacho.
Instead, the Manchester United winger was busy scouring the penalty spot and trying to make the surface more difficult to take a penalty. Andre Onana then saved from Jordan Larsson in what turned out to be the final action of the game as the Red Devils won 1-0.

Copenhagen captain Viktor Claesson clearly disagreed with Garnacho’s behavior and suggested that while it probably had no influence on Larsson’s goal, he shouldn’t have done it either.
“It’s unsportsmanlike,” Claesson told the Danish magazine Clearly. “It’s not something I stand for or anything I would do, but if he did it, he did it. I don’t think that determined whether he missed or scored.”
Former Arsenal striker Kim Kallstrom agreed. While working as a pundit for Swedish broadcaster TV4 Play, Kallstrom criticized the Argentine for his actions.

“What an ugly guy…” Kallstrom said. “This is so childish. It’s such a baby-level thing.”
With the win, Manchester United have now moved up to third place in Group A of the Champions League. Bayern Munich have won all three games and appear guaranteed to qualify for the knockout stages, but second place is still up for grabs.
Galatasaray are currently in second place with four points, United are third with three and Copenhagen are bottom with a single point. However, each team still has three games left, although anything is certainly possible.
