The Contrasting Impressions of America: A Poet’s Perspective

The poet was worried about the fate of his homeland.

Sergei Yesenin was a great travel lover. The poet traveled to many European countries, and from the autumn of 1922 to the winter of 1923 explored the United States. And the overseas country left indelible impressions in his soul.

The writer was impressed by the technological innovations that can be seen in every American city. Luminous billboards, signs, the widespread use of electricity – all this did not leave Yesenin indifferent.

“You are involuntarily amazed at the capabilities of a person, and it is a shame that in Russia they still believe in a grandfather with a beard and rely on his mercy,” – confessed the writer.

At the same time, some of the distinctive features of the country and its inhabitants still upset him. Yesenin did not like, for example, that Americans pay too much attention to business and work and are distinguished by narrowness of thought and limitations.
